To prevent hypertrophy of the protective gland, is it effective to take health foods? How to do daily health care?

 9:31am, 11 September 2025

The prostate is also called the protective gland, which is an organ that every male has, but with age, the prostate will often gradually become hypertrophy. Some people think that women are naturally prone to urinary tract infections, which is unfair (the incidence rate of urinary tract infections is about 1:9 for men and women), but in fact, men also have diseases that girls do not get, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)! As men age, the risk of hypertrophy of prostate glands will also increase, especially after the age of 50, the incidence rate will rise significantly. Although it will not bring serious threats to life, it will affect men's quality of life. If you want to know more about its causes and treatment methods, you can see the article "All Guide to Explain the Causes of Hyperplasia of Prostate (Prostate) and Prevention and Treatment".

In addition to using drugs or surgery, of course, some people want to use health foods to prevent it, or reduce the symptoms of hypertrophy of the gland before it develops to the point where treatment is needed. But when everyone compares several related products at the same time, they should feel overwhelmed, right? The ingredients of these products all seem to be, but if you look closely, it seems to be a little different. So what is the difference between them? To be honest, I really don’t know where to choose if I haven’t studied it! In this article, the nutritionists and doctors of the MedPartner team will introduce the commonly used ingredients in gland care products and review the efficacy according to relevant documents, helping you to select suitable health products to replenish them for yourself or your family. Without saying much, we started to take classes!

The prevalence of hypertrophy in high-age men is very high in the world. From a business perspective, this should be a product with great market potential, but it is difficult for everyone to see related health foods on the market. This is a very wonderful phenomenon in the Taiwan market, known as the love for health foods. But how could this happen? The main reason for this situation is that many documents have proposed or commonly used as ingredients for foreign health products. The Food and Drug Administration has not yet allowed this ingredient to be added to food, and has not been able to enter Taiwan through normal pipelines. Of course, it is not necessary to say that it will be used by local manufacturers to make a product.

When you see this, you don’t have to worry about the ingredients that are not yet allowed. If you eat them, it will really bring you any harm to the body. In fact, the reason is that some ingredients are from the source and are not the food that is commonly eaten in Taiwan. The Food and Drug Administration has to spend more time confirming safety and make sure there is no problem before the raw materials will be allowed to be imported into Taiwan. For example, the ingredient commonly used for prostate health and male ingredient cannot be used. (To mention, if you want to know if a certain thing can be eaten, you can go to the website of the Wash Department to check the "Food Materials Available")

Common ingredients for prostate health care

The most common ingredients for prostate health care include: Saw palmetto, Lycopene, Pygeum Africanum, Urtica dioica, Pumpkin seed oil, selenium. In addition, linseed extract (lignol), green tea extract, ginger, pomegranate, rosemary extract, etc. may also appear in the ingredient list.

Some of the above ingredients are not produced by manufacturers in Taiwan, but it is legal to buy them back from abroad. In order to give everyone a more complete understanding, the ingredients that cannot be legally added in Taiwan will be introduced together. The composition elements of the formula for

No matter which manufacturer, most of the formulas are similar. This will happen that everyone's formula design is mostly the same. Due to hypertrophy of the prostate, it is believed that it may be related to male glomermon's calcification quality and chronic inflammation reaction. In addition, some health foods want to improve urination caused by hypertrophy of the gland. Therefore, this product is roughly designed from the following five directions:

1. Inhibit 5-alpha reductase: pyrochloride extract, pumpkin seed oil, radish extract, African plum tree peel extract

2. Anti-inflammatory: pumpkin seed oil, green tea extract, ginger yellow, pomegranate … etc.

3. Scavenge free radicals: antioxidants, such as oxotin, selenium, plant polyphenols … etc.

4. Protect the function of bladder and bladder detrusor muscle: pumpkin seed oil

5. Prostatic hyperplasia caused by prolactin: phytosterol ), such as brown extract, pumpkin seed oil, squash extract, and African plum tree peel extract.

The five development points are mostly from cell or animal tests. They found that they may have such effects. So the manufacturer applied it to the recipe, but actually, is it effective if people eat it? This is very difficult, please read the next paragraph of research evidence.

Research certificates on the ingredients of prostate health products

Currently, the research certificates on these ingredients are generally not enough to provide a positive evidence to support their efficacy, but let’s take a look at what the human trial results of some ingredients say!

Elephantin

Tomatoes, tomato juice, watermelon, papaya, grapefruit, etc., all contain 26hellip; plants, which have antioxidant ability, and there are also some studies on preventing BPH.

There was a 8 review study in 2012 that concluded that the current research evidence is neither supported nor anti-anti-elixin for the treatment or prevention of BPH or adenocarcinoma (Ref. 3).

African plum tree peel extract

African plum tree is a plant that grows naturally in Central and South America, Madagascar, Comoro Island and several Nagas. In traditional methods, local residents will extract juice from the skin to treat health problems such as inflammation, kidney disease, urinary tract problems, prostate inflammation, etc. When added to health products, the main active ingredient is plant sterol.

In 2015, there was a clinical study that reviewed several plant extracts, including African plum trees. The study found that it has some evidence to improve urinary tract symptoms, urine flow and quality of life (Ref. 4).

Cochrane reviewed 18 random control trials in 2002, and the study included 1,562 men with BPH. Research has found that supplementation of standardized African plum tree peel extracts may reduce the symptoms caused by BPH. However, these research reviewed either have small scales, short tracking periods, or different doses of the doses used (Ref. 5).

From the current research evidence, it is difficult to tell whether the extracts of African plum tree skins really help prevent or improve BPH.

sausage extract

sausage is a plant that grows in tidal and warm climates, and is also an ingredient that is commonly found in gland care products. The main active ingredient is plant sterol. There are not many studies related to erectile sap extract and BPH, and the evidence support is not strong.

In 2016, there was a review article evaluating the efficacy and safety of anesthetic extract in BPH. The study reviewed 5 random, double-blind, comfort control trials, and included a total of 1,128 patients. It was found that anesthetic was safe and may have the effect of improving the associated symptoms caused by BPH (Ref. 6).

Steel Palm Extract

Steel Palm Extract

Steel Palm Extract is a plant native to the southeast of the United States. The fruit contains rich fatty acids and phytosterols. The ingredients added to health products are extracted from the fruit.

Cochrane 2012 Cochrane reviewed 32 random control trials, including 5,666 men with BPH, and found that two to three times a day of calcification supplementation did not significantly improve urine flow or gland size in BPH patients (Ref. 7).

A double-blind, comfort control, random test in 2011, with 369 age-old age subjects, showed that replenishing the standard sample 320 mg of tartar extract three times a day without reducing lower urinary tract symptoms caused by BPH (Ref. 8).

Judging from the results of these studies, the calcification of calcification does not seem to have any real help. However, in 2014, there was a comparative study combining different ingredients, which may be able to add points to the calcification of calcification. The study found 225 men with BPH aged 55-80, and randomly assigned them to Group A, Palmite + Solanin + Selenium, Group B, a drug for benign hypertrophy of the gland, Tamsolin 0.4 mg and Group C, Group A plus Group B. After six months of the

trial, it was found that Group C significantly reduced lower urinary tract symptoms caused by BPH ( Ref. 9 ). Judging from the results of this study, if you have received treatment with BPH drugs, you may consider health products similar to Group A (Palmite + Solanin + Selenium).

Pumpkin seed oil

Don't be suspicious, it is the pumpkin that is often carved with facial features during the Christmas seasons, and pumpkin seed oil is the oil squeezed from seeds. This ingredient is also a ingredient that is commonly found in gland care products. The main active ingredient may be the plant sterol unique to pumpkin seeds.

There are not many tests for pumpkin seeds with BPH. In 2015, there was a study in Germany with 1,431 men with BPH symptoms. Randomly divide the subject into pumpkin seeds (10 grams per day), pumpkin seed extract (1 grams per day) or soothing set. After 12 months of the trial, it was found that the two groups that supplemented pumpkin seeds had significant improvements in symptoms and quality of life (Ref. 10). But in the future, more large-scale research or review research is needed to further confirm whether pumpkin seeds are really helpful in improving the symptoms of hypertrophy of glands.

, although gland care products, from the results of mechanism or partial trials, some ingredients seem useful, but in terms of human trials, more research is needed to have a more positive answer. Before this, this product didn't seem to have any security issues if you want to replenish it, but it also lacks really effective evidence. Therefore, don’t expect any significant results after replenishing. Under this premise, it’s better to eat it.

How to do daily health care for the prostate?

Prostate health care does not necessarily require health foods to handle it. Basically, we still recommend that everyone go to bed early and get up early, exercise regularly, and have a balanced diet. This is the most basic task of preventive health care. If you are friends who have early hypertrophy of the protective gland and have some urination symptoms, we recommend not drinking too much water (not exceeding 2000 c.c), especially avoid drinking before going to bed. In addition, you can use Kegel exercise to train your urination-related muscles. (The simple method is to try to vent the urine halfway through the urine and then re-exhale. ) In addition, avoiding spicy and irritating foods as much as possible will also help solve the symptoms~
